The Miami Dolphins' promising start to the 2024 NFL season has hit a significant roadblock as the team announced they are placing star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve following a concussion sustained in Week 2.
Tagovailoa, who had been off to a strong start this season, suffered the injury during the third quarter of the Dolphins' game against the Buffalo Bills. The decision to place him on IR means he will be sidelined for at least the next four weeks, dealing a blow to Miami's playoff aspirations.
This latest setback raises concerns about Tagovailoa's long-term health, as it's not his first concussion in the NFL. The 26-year-old quarterback has a history of head injuries, including a highly publicized incident in the 2022 season that led to changes in the league's concussion protocols.
Head coach Mike McDaniel expressed his support for Tagovailoa in a press conference, stating, "Our primary concern is Tua's health. We're following all medical protocols and will ensure he's fully recovered before considering a return to play."
In Tagovailoa's absence, veteran backup Teddy Bridgewater is expected to take the reins of the Dolphins' offense. The team has also elevated rookie quarterback Skylar Thompson from the practice squad to serve as Bridgewater's backup.
The Dolphins, who started the season 2-0, now face a challenging stretch without their starting quarterback. Their upcoming schedule includes games against formidable opponents like the New England Patriots and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
This situation once again brings player safety, particularly regarding head injuries, to the forefront of NFL discussions. It remains to be seen how this will impact the Dolphins' season and Tagovailoa's career moving forward.
